"All children, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children's literature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because the tale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashed up, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is also witty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John, and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but they also happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of such throwaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she was tidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberately obscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and "pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relatively innocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed more safely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of its children's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligence that are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with the dastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... a little bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects: "This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook that Peter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacle of good form." I am new to programming. I somehow missed picking up any language as an undergraduate and by the time I became a graduate student in physics I knew I needed to pick one up fast. I've tried many books but I just can't get through them. I usually don't make it past the 2nd chapter. There are many reasons for this but mostly the authors do not have enough examples and they tend to go off on tangents that detract from the lesson at hand. Recently I began a research project that used a ton of Fortran 90 legacy code and so I decided that I needed to try again. I got this book about a week ago and I am finishing chapter 5 at the moment. This book is great for learning how to program. It cuts right to the meat and gives well explained examples and quizzes throughout the book. I worked the examples and quizzes and a few problems from the end of the chapter after reading through it. If you are looking for a reference this probably isn't it. If, however, you are a beginner like me looking to learn how to program in Fortran 90/95 this is your book.

I have been using this text to learn Fortran 90/95. I have used Matlab significantly and understand very minimal C++. I find this book very useful and informative. It outlines programing pitfalls and tips for good programming practices. The examples are very easy to follow and the index is very usable. I would say this is a good book if you are just learning Fortran. Another thing I like about it is the fact that it has a chapter discussing older Fortran practices and the new/ modified commands. I have been using that section a lot to update an old Fortran 77 program I have. Overall it was well worth the $60 or so that I paid. There may be other references that are available online for free, but I like that I can highlight and write in a text, so I prefer printed material to online material.

I am currently enrolled in a course called high performance computing and this was the recommended text. I basically do not anything about computers let alone programming itself. This course was a 3rd yr maths subject. I found this book really easy to read, I could pick up the concepts and logic behind it all pretty easily and be right into the discussion within seconds. Lots of examples and test cases with concepts explained pretty clearly, even questions that you are likely to ask are all answered. If you never learnt to program, or new to fortran, this is the THE book to read. I pretty much just read this book and teach myself, I find it alot more use of my time than going lectures when I can just read fortran in my time. just for the record, look up fortan in wikipedia, this text is the first reference.

It teaches the basics without overwhelming with details, and then divulges into advanced detailed concepts in later chapters. In this way, it is as good an introduction as it is a reference guide.The real benefit of this text is in its numerous examples, all relevant especially to the scientists. For every concept, there is an example of its usage. Examples even show pros or cons of ways in which one can write his code, leading to discussions on programming efficiency.All in all, a great text.
