I am new to programming. I somehow missed picking up any language as an undergraduate and by the time I became a graduate student in physics I knew I needed to pick one up fast. I've tried many books but I just can't get through them. I usually don't make it past the 2nd chapter. There are many reasons for this but mostly the authors do not have enough examples and they tend to go off on tangents that detract from the lesson at hand. Recently I began a research project that used a ton of Fortran 90 legacy code and so I decided that I needed to try again. I got this book about a week ago and I am finishing chapter 5 at the moment. This book is great for learning how to program. It cuts right to the meat and gives well explained examples and quizzes throughout the book. I worked the examples and quizzes and a few problems from the end of the chapter after reading through it. If you are looking for a reference this probably isn't it. If, however, you are a beginner like me looking to learn how to program in Fortran 90/95 this is your book.

I have been using this text to learn Fortran 90/95. I have used Matlab significantly and understand very minimal C++. I find this book very useful and informative. It outlines programing pitfalls and tips for good programming practices. The examples are very easy to follow and the index is very usable. I would say this is a good book if you are just learning Fortran. Another thing I like about it is the fact that it has a chapter discussing older Fortran practices and the new/ modified commands. I have been using that section a lot to update an old Fortran 77 program I have. Overall it was well worth the $60 or so that I paid. There may be other references that are available online for free, but I like that I can highlight and write in a text, so I prefer printed material to online material.

I am currently enrolled in a course called high performance computing and this was the recommended text. I basically do not anything about computers let alone programming itself. This course was a 3rd yr maths subject. I found this book really easy to read, I could pick up the concepts and logic behind it all pretty easily and be right into the discussion within seconds. Lots of examples and test cases with concepts explained pretty clearly, even questions that you are likely to ask are all answered. If you never learnt to program, or new to fortran, this is the THE book to read. I pretty much just read this book and teach myself, I find it alot more use of my time than going lectures when I can just read fortran in my time. just for the record, look up fortan in wikipedia, this text is the first reference.

This book is great for the Fortran beginner to the frequent user looking for a nice reference guide. It teaches the basics without overwhelming with details, and then divulges into advanced detailed concepts in later chapters. In this way, it is as good an introduction as it is a reference guide.The real benefit of this text is in its numerous examples, all relevant especially to the scientists. For every concept, there is an example of its usage. Examples even show pros or cons of ways in which one can write his code, leading to discussions on programming efficiency.All in all, a great text.

Had everything I needed for the class at an accessible, affordable price. My course didn't need any online materials or resources.

I got this book to help expand on my knowledge of programming for school. I went in knowing C++, so this book was more than helpful. I could see it being of great use for a first time programmer too.

I have written and maintained a lot of Fortran 77 code and a small amount of Fortran 90 code, so I was looking for a book that would include the changes in the language in Fortran 90, 95 and 2003, what they were for and how to use them. This book does a very good job of that.

About the Author

Y. Daniel Liang is currently a Yamacraw professor of software engineering in the School of Computing at Armstrong State University, Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Liang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Oklahoma in 1991, and an MS and BS in Computer Science from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, in 1986 and 1983. Prior to joining Armstrong, he was an associate professor in computer science at Purdue University in Fort Wayne, where he twice received the Excellence in Research award. Dr. Liang was trained in theoretical computer science. He has published in SIAM Journal on Computing, Discrete Applied Mathematics, Acta Informatics, and Information Processing Letters. He is the author of more than thirty books. His popular computer science texts are widely adopted in the world. Dr. Liang was elected a Java Champion in 2005 by Sun Microsystems. He has given lectures on Java internationally.

First let me say that I really like this C++ textbook a lot and I think it is a great learning tool for my current college class in C++ and it would also have at least four stars from me if it did not two ABSOLUTELY UNFORGIVABLE flaws.Flaw #1: This book is really a 26 chapter book... but you only get 17 chapters for the money you spend and there is no access code in the book for the remaining chapters in the kindle version. There are many choice words I have for this but for this review I consider this completely immoral.Flaw #2: You only get 2 downloads (both my computers) in this version. I use several mobile devices (including kindle) to read my textbooks. I do not have a problem reading any other textbooks in my Kindle library except this one... (Go figure). This is actually comical... I can't read a kindle textbook on a kindle... I have a serious problem with that.Solution: Charge me more for the (ENTIRE) book and allow me to download it on any device registered with amazon to my name!

Firstly, I did NOT buy the Kindle edition. I highly recommend purchasing/renting a physical copy instead. The book itself is not very heavy since it is paperback, and the material within the book is great. The price to rent this book (used) was also great, but I would recommend buying (used, again) it IF you are an computer engineer/scientist.

4 weeks into my computer science class and this book is pretty handy. It's easy to read and understand but I just wish it was Hardcover because it already looks as if I've been using it for years.

You could tell the book was used, but all the information was there. Its fine though, it was cheap

This book is a scam. The publisher has chapters they didn't include in the book and give you an access code with the book just so that you have to but the damn thing new in order to get chapters that the instructor wants you to read. I think its dishonest and reprehensible.

It's in Black and White. Don't buy unless you already know a language, preferably C.
